Still Creatures

Single channel video installation 1999

Each sequence is composed by combining two stills within an assigned time frame. The morph technique is applied to transform the images in order to shape the sentient attitude of the person portrayed. The result is a time-based process which induces a dynamic to the image source.

The process transpires gradually and continuously, providing a subtle evolution or change which is almost imperceptible to the eye. The dynamic generated—the animation of these characters—looks very realistic, but a kind of artificiality pervades the mood of their computer-generated nature.

The emphasis is placed on the expressions of humans to display underlying emotions that precede the spoken word. It is a work about understanding the power of immediate communication—that which has a direct effect on the senses.

The work is silent to focus the attention on the production of meaning made by the visual senses, and to increase the concentration on these minimalistic portrayals.
