Expression Modulator

Video work 1999

Expression Modulator focuses on non-verbal communication, decontextualising the usual associative processes inherent to expression.

Still images of a range of emotions have been dynamically combined to modulate an indescribable set of expressions.

The deconstruction of conventional narratives of depiction develop out of this artistic image processing—emotions are generated through the digital manipulation of the human face. The face is highlighted as a medium for interaction, a silent agent which conveys instant revelations of a non-oral culture.

It modulates the emotion flow and acts as a link between the internal thoughts of a person and the message that they wish to communicate to another, producing a non-verbal account of the changes of emotional expression.

By disassociating meaning from verbal language, a process develops that investigates the abilities of digital technology, with the aim to reaffirm the importance of the universality of communication.
